Dawson Set to Compete at NCAA Championships
June 05, 2018 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State track & field's Destiny Dawson is set to compete in her first NCAA Track & Field National Championships this Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene.
A redshirt junior from Cottage Grove, Ore., Dawson is only the third student-athlete from Oregon State to qualify for the NCAA outdoor championships since the track & field program's revival in 2005.
She joins Laura Carlyle (2011, 2012) and Kara Hallock (2017) as the only Beavers to make the championship event in the last 14 seasons.
Dawson joins Connie Peterka as the only Beavers to ever qualify for the NCAAs in the javelin. Peterka was a three-time All-American in the event back in the late 1980s.
Dawson qualified for the 24-woman field by taking 12th place at the NCAA West Regional Championships on May 24th. Her throw of 163-9 was just enough to advance her to the championship round in Eugene.
Dawson holds the Oregon State school record in the javelin at 168-11; a throw that earned her third place honors at the Pacific-12 Conference championships. She has thrown over 160' five times this season, twice eclipsing 168'.
Dawson will earn honorable-mention All-American honors at the very least if she competes in the event with the top-eight finishers earning first-team honors; places 9-16 earn second-team honors and those who finish 17th-24th are awarded honorable mention.
The women's javelin begins at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday at Hayward Field down in Eugene.
