Beavers In Fifth Place At NCAA Regionals
May 07, 2018 | Women's Golf
MADISON, Wis. – Nicole Schroeder fired a career-best 4-under 68 to lead the Oregon State women's golf in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Regionals on Monday.
Â
The Beavers are in fifth place in the 18-team field after carding a 1-over 289 at the par-72, 6,313-yard University Ridge Golf Course.
Â
Virginia leads the tourney with a 9-under 279, while Duke is second with a 5-under 283, USC is third with a 3-under 285 and Arizona State is fourth with an even-par 288.
Â
The top six teams at the Madison Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 18-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
Â
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 8 a.m. CT (6 a.m. PT) on Tuesday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
Â
"We learned a lot from our result at the Pac-12 Championship," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "We got complacent and I think it really scared them a bit wondering if they would make regionals. Once we made it, reality set in that we have another life. The question was how would we respond?
Â
"The energy amongst us all has been great. They are loose, having fun and enjoying the moments as they come. We still have a lot of golf to play and we have to stick to what we can control. Most of all, we have to continue being who we are, keep the good energy going and have some fun."
Â
Schroeder, a sophomore from Rocklin, Calif., started on fire with birdies on three of the first four holes. She finished the day with six birdies and is tied for third place with a 4-under 68. Her best previous collegiate score was a 2-under 70.
Â
Junior Olivia Benzin was steady throughout the round with one birdie, 16 pars and one bogey to post an even-par 72. Sophomore Mari Nishiura dropped in three birdies that helped her shoot a 2-over 74, while senior Susie Cavanagh and freshman Ellie Slama each finished with a 3-over 75.
Â
Beth Lillie of Virginia and Gabby Curtis of Wisconsin share the individual lead with a 5-under 67.
