May 18, 2018 | Women's Golf
STILLWATER, Okla. – Nicole Schroeder opened the NCAA Division I Women's Golf National Championships with a 5-over 77 on Friday.
Schroeder had four birdies, five bogeys and two doubles at the challenging par-72, 6,328-yard Karsten Creek Golf Club to put her in a tie for 68th place. Her birdies came on the par-3, 137-yard seventh, par-4, 327-yard 12th, par-5, 502-yard 14th and par-5, 482-yard 18th holes.
Only eight golfers in the 132-player field finished in red figures, led by Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest with a 7-under 65.
The NCAA Championships consists of all 24 teams and 12 individuals completing 54 holes of stroke play. The top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will advance for one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion. The top eight teams then compete in match play for the championship.
Schroeder will tee off at 1:05 p.m. CT (11:05 a.m. PT) in the second round on Saturday. She will be paired with Micheala Williams of Tennessee and Marthe Wold of California. The tee times for Sunday's round will be determined by individual standings after the first two rounds.
Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
A sophomore from Rocklin, Calif., Schroeder qualified for the NCAA Championships by winning the NCAA Regional in Madison, Wis., with a career-best 10-under 206.
Schroeder is the fourth Oregon State women's golfer to advance to the NCAA Championships as an individual, joining All-American Kathleen Takaishi in 1999, Anica Yoo in 2015 and Susie Cavanagh last year.
