Barnard Adds Two to Volleyball Program for 2018
April 11, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball program grew by two Wednesday when head coach Mark Barnard officially announced the additions of Maddie Sheehan and Kyla Waiters. The duo become the fifth and sixth members of the 2018 recruiting class and will arrive in Corvallis this summer.
Â
"We're bringing in the largest mixture of players we've had," head coach Mark Barnard said. "From experienced two-year transfers to high school seniors. This group fills out our roster across most positions and will complement our young group from 2017."
Â
Waiters, who played middle blocker in high school, earned 6A First Team All-District honors at Reagan High in San Antonio, Texas as a senior in 2017 and was named as an Under Armour All-American. Prior to the 2017 season, Waiters starred at Mater Dei High School earning All-County Second Team by the Orange County Register.
Â
During the summer of 2017, Waiters, playing with Tstreet Volleyball Club helped her squad to bronze medals at the Triple Crown NIT, the Junior National Qualifier in Las Vegas, at the Windy City Junior National Qualifier and at the West Coast Cup. Waiters also won a pair gold medals in the Sand Soul Beach Tournament in 2016 and helped her club to a first place finish with Tstreet in the Southern California Volleyball Association (SCVA).
Â
"Kyla is a very good athlete. We aim to move her to be a left-side attacker. She's fast and jumps well and has a great disposition. She's a Pac-12 quality athlete and we're excited to work with her"
Â
During her high school career, Sheehan, a native of Leander, Texas, set the school record for assists with 1,456 at Rouse High where she earned all-district honors in 2016 and 2017. Sheehan led the Raiders to the state championship game in 2017 earning all-tournament honors and was named to the all-state team by the Texas Association of Volleyball Coaches (TAVC) and was also a TAVC All-Star in 2017.
Â
Sheehan earned Academic All-State and is a three-time Academic All-District selection. She plans to study BioHealth Sciences at Oregon State.
Â
"Maddie is a bit of a hitting setter and, I think, a hidden setting gem. She's had limited setting experience but she delivers the ball well and has very nice hands. She can become quite a threat with greater tactical awareness as she gains more setting experience."
