Beavers Remain Undefeated at Home with Win Over BYU
March 05, 2018 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State gymnastics team defended its home floor Monday night defeating No. 21 BYU, 196.975-196.375. The Beavers, who entered the meet ranked at No. 11 this week after not competing last week, are now 4-0 inside Gill Coliseum. Junior McKenna Singley secured the all-around win with a career-high score of 39.400.
Â
Although the Beavers earned the win over the Cougars it wasn't easy. Oregon State had falls to overcome on three events, but subsequent gymnasts came through with clutch routines again and again in the winning effort.
Â
"We've talked a lot about them feeling like if someone messes up, we just move on and do our own jobs," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "We work on trying to separate what each person's job is and focus on what that person needs to do. We want them to compete to the best of their abilities and not worry about everything else that is happening."
Â
Oregon State trailed early in the meet 49.100-49.050 following the opening rotation. Sophomores Destinee Davis and Lena Greene tied for meet-high scores of 9.850 and Mary Jacobsen added a 9.825 for the Beavers, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the Cougars early on.
Â
The Beavers' bounced back on the bars as Mariana Colussi-Pelaez, McKenna Singley and Alyssa Minyard each posted scores of 9.875 in the middle of the lineup. An uncharacteristic fall by Jacobsen, her first of the season, left sophomore Halli Briscoe in a high-pressure position as the anchor of the lineup. Briscoe, who was making her college debut after exhibitioning last week and five times in 2017 before a knee injury ended her season prematurely, came through with a clutch performance to tie for the meet-high with another 9.875. The Beavers totaled 49.300 on the bars to take a lead they would not relinquish.
Â
On the beam, OSU again had a fall midway through the rotation leaving more high-pressure routines for the final three in the lineup. Davis tied for top honors with a 9.875 while Singley and Maela Lazaro tacked on scores of 9.850 each.
Â
OSU found itself in a tight spot from the start in the final stanza with a fall from the leadoff position, but the rest of the lineup was on fire tallying a season-high 49.575. Jacobsen corrected the course with a strong routine to score 9.875 setting up Sabrina Gill, who registered a career-high 9.90. Singley and Isis Lowery following with back-to-back scores of 9.925 to tie their career-bests and Kaitlyn Yanish secured the event title with a personal-best 9.950.
