Beavers Even Series against Ducks; Brandner Hits Walk-Off
March 30, 2018 | Softball
CORVALLIS – No. 25 Oregon State University softball earned its first victory over rival No. 2/5 Oregon since the 2012 season at the OSU Softball Complex on Friday evening tying the Civil War Series with the Ducks at one game apiece after a 4-3 win.
The Beavers improve to 20-14 overall this season and 3-4 in Pac-12 play. Meanwhile, Oregon falls to 26-6 overall and 3-2 in conference action.
It was another scoreless start to the game as neither team put a run on the board until the fourth inning. Oregon State's defense held tough through the start getting the Beavers off the field in the second, third and fourth innings with runners in scoring position for the Ducks.
Still tied in the bottom of the fourth and a runner on second, Missy Nunes singled to right center field scoring Stephanie Merwin from second base, who pinch ran for Alysha Everett. With runners still in scoring position and two outs Oregon elected for a pitching change taking out starter Miranda Elish in favor of Maggie Balint. Balint faced catcher Sara Lillie who wasted no time hitting a two RBI single.
The Beavers took a 3-0 lead to the fifth where the Ducks scored two runs with two outs on the board.
Trailing 3-2 and down to their final two outs Oregon's Gwen Svekis hit a solo shot off the scoreboard in left field tying the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, McKenna Arriola hit a one out single putting the go ahead run on first. With two outs, Everett reached on an error pushing Arriola to second base and in scoring position. Trailing 0-1 in the count designated player Hope Brandner hit a walk-off RBI single to center field winning the game 4-3.
This was the first win for the Beavers over the Ducks in the Civil War Series since March 26, 2012. Oregon State also handed Miranda Elish (23-1) her first loss of her career.
Meehra Nelson (11-6) was credited with the win, coming in relief for Mariah Mazon in the fifth inning. Nelson pitched 2.1 innings with two strikeouts. Mazon went 4.2 innings with two strikeouts.
