Beavers Tied For Second Place At Duck Invitational
March 26, 2018 | Men's Golf
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon State men's golf team used a late charge to move up the leaderboard and move into a tie for second place at the Duck Invitational on Monday.
Â
The Beavers shot a 2-under 282 in the afternoon, the best second round in the 16-team field, to climb eight spots and tie host Oregon with a 12-over 580. Santa Clara is a stroke better with an 11-over 579 at the par-71, 7,020-yard Eugene Country Club.
Â
The final round of the two-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
Â
"We started out pretty slowly this morning and more than anything it was great to see the guys bounce back in the manner they did with the low round of the afternoon by four strokes," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said.
Â
"As a team we made some silly mistakes that cost us way too many shots," Reehoorn added. "But as a group we have a chance to be in the final round and compete for a tournament win tomorrow.
Â
"The key will be to continue doing what we have been working on for the last two weeks -- decision making, keeping the ball to the fat side of the hole and controlling what we can control."
Â
All five Oregon State players posted a better score in the afternoon.
Â
Spencer Tibbits led the way for the Beavers and is tied for third place with a 2-under 71-69--140. He has carded 11 sub-par rounds during his freshman campaign and will look to better his career-best finish of sixth place set at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational this past fall.
Â
Sophomore Shawn Lu is tied for 10th place with an even-par 75-67--142 that included five birdies and one bogey in the afternoon round. His best finish as a collegian is a tie for 10th place at last spring's El Macero Classic.
Â
Sophomore Kyosuke Hara is tied for 41st with an 8-over 76-74--150, freshman Keaton Gudz is a stroke back and tied for 49th with a 9-over 76-75--151 and junior Trevor Yu sits in a tie for 71st with a 13-over 83-72--155.
Â
Riley Elmes of Loyola Marymount has the clubhouse lead with a 5-under 137 and Oregon's Norman Xiong is second with a 4-under 138.
