Bresser and Dhesi Earn All-American
March 16, 2018 | Wrestling
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Oregon State University wrestling team has multiple All-Americans for the first time since 2013. Ronnie Bresser and Amarveer Dhesi remain alive at the 2018 Division I NCAA Wrestling Championships at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
The Beavers currently sit in 23rd with 16.5 points.
Bresser wrestles Zeke Moisey from West Virginia for 7th place. Dhesi still has a chance to place as high as third; he faces Mike Hughes (Hofstra) tomorrow morning. The two met in the second round of the tournament with Dhesi pinning Hughes.
The second day of competition opened up with the 125-pound quarterfinals where Bresser was pitted against No. 1-seeded, and defending national champion, Darian Cruz. Cruz won a tightly contested battle, edging Bresser by decision 2-0.
Needing just one more win to solidify his first All-American status Bresser beat Luke Welch, for the second time this season, in sudden victory 6-4. His hopes of a third place finish were still alive, but in the fifth round of consolations Sabastian Rivera (Northwestern) got the best of the junior sending him to the 7th/8th place bout.
Redshirt senior heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi reached the semifinals for the second time in his career. Dhesi earned his spot in the semis by defeating Penn State's Nick Nevills by decision 4-2.
It was déjà vu for Dhesi in the semifinals where he faced Adam Coon (Michigan) for the second time. Coon got the better of Dhesi in 2016, and managed a 4-2 decision this year over the Surrey, B.C. native.
