Beavers Open Outdoor Season Friday
March 14, 2018 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State University track & field team is set to open its 2018 outdoor season this weekend at the Lewis and Clark Spring Break Open on the campuses of Lewis and Clark College and Clackamas Community College in Portland.
The hammer and javelin throws will be held at CCC on Friday afternoon. The long jump and high jump, as well as all track events, are to be held at Eldon Fix Track at Griswold Stadium.
"We want to take advantage of the local meets," began head coach Louie Quintana. "We're taking eight or nine of our women throwers, and are looking forward to evaluating them this weekend."
The Beavers are back in action for the first time since the conclusion of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor championships in Seattle on Feb. 23-24. Of the contingent heading to Portland the vast majority competed during the indoor season. The exceptions being in javelin which was not contested during the indoor season.
Six Beavers are slated to toss the javelin on Friday afternoon; Amber Peschka, Delaney Hall, Destiny Dawson, McKenzie Allison, Saskia McNairy and Kindel Baily. A group that is prepared to set the tone.
"The javelin is a big deal for our program and our team," began Quintana.
"Destiny Dawson will be in her first competition in an Oregon State uniform; competing last year unattached she would have broken the school record"
Saskia McNairy and Claire Corbitt won't be competing in an array of events as during the indoor season. Both are preparing for the Jim Click Multi-Events in April.
"Saskia [McNairy] and Claire [Corbitt] are preparing to do a full heptathlon event in Tucson in a few weeks," said Quintana. "They are feeling out multiple events this weekend to be as prepared for that as possible."
A few student-athletes will stay in Corvallis to continue their training and prepare for the bulk of the outdoor schedule, and ultimately the Pacific-12 Conference meets.
