Mazon Spins First Career Win in 8-2 Decision over Cowgirls

True freshman strikes out seven in debut for Oregon State
TEMPE, Ariz. – Freshman Mariah Mazon (Tulare, Calif.) was billed as the opening day starter for the Oregon State softball program and sat down seven over the course of seven innings as the Beavers bested No. 21/24 Oklahoma State, 8-2, in day one at the Kajikawa Classic.
"It's great to get that first game under our belt," said head coach Laura Berg. "We played well against a top-25 team. Mariah (Mazon) threw well, and Alysha (Everett), Jessica (Garcia) and Missy (Nunes) all came up clutch with big hits. Our players are getting on and it was a fun game to watch."
Mazon finished the complete game with seven strikeouts to only two walks issued and two runs allowed.
Oregon State (1-0) struck first in the top of the fourth inning after junior Jessica Garcia (Hughson, Calif.) sent a diving line drive to the left fielder to score freshman Mayu Molina (Granger, Wash.) from third base.
A misplay on the fielder allowed freshman Missy Nunes (Livermore, Calif.) to score from second, and Garcia showcased her abilities as she sped around the bases and ended up scoring on the error, putting the Beavers up 3-0.
The Cowgirls (0-1) responded in the bottom half of the inning after Michaela Richbourg's sacrifice fly scored Madi Sue Montgomery, while Jamie Lowrie scored on Maddi Holcomb's infield single.
Oregon State hit cruise control from there as Mazon settled into a rhythm while senior Alysha Everett (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) laced a two-run double off the left center wall, scoring freshman Camryn Ybarra (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and junior Shelby Weeks (Tracy, Calif.) for a 5-2 lead.
Garcia added a run in the top of the sixth as she scored on an Oklahoma State error, while Nunes provided the exclamation point with a two-run jack in the top of the seventh for the 8-2 final.
The Beavers will face Indiana at 2 p.m. MT at Farrington Stadium to wrap up day one of the Kajikawa Classic. The game is set to broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks with Ann Schatz and Barb Jordan on the call.
