Oregon State athletic trainer will work with the women's hockey team
Oregon State associate athletic trainer Katie Homan has earned a prestigious invitation from USA Hockey, as she will join the women's hockey team as an athletic trainer for the upcoming Olympics in Pyongchang, South Korea.
"This is a great honor for Katie," said Fred Tedeschi, Oregon State director of athletic training services. "Her selection is the culmination of her dedication to her craft, and a testament to her skill, attitude and service to the athletes under her care."
Homan has been involved with USA Hockey since December of 2015, when she was selected to join the national team's training camp after being recommended by one of her classmates from graduate school. Homan has since worked with the organization at five other events, including the 2016 Winter Training Camp and the 2017 National Team Selection Camp.
"At every event with USA Hockey, I have worked alongside some great medical professionals and athletes, who are even better people," Homan said. "I'm extremely excited to have the opportunity to continue to work with this awesome group. I have left every event a better clinician and I'm thrilled to be able to continue to learn and grow over the course of this next month as a professional and person, while trying to do my part to help this team achieve their goals."
Homan is in her fourth year at Oregon State and works primarily with the women's soccer and rowing programs. Prior to joining the Beavers, she worked as an assistant athletic trainer at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Homan received her bachelor's degree at Otterbein University, before earning her master's at North Carolina.
"I am very happy for Katie," said Oregon State head women's soccer coach Linus Rhode. "This such a great opportunity for her, and she fully deserves it."
The USA women's hockey team is currently training in preparation for the Olympics, which will begin Feb. 9. Team USA will open its women's hockey slate on Feb. 11 vs. Finland, as part of Group A. The elimination rounds will begin on Feb. 17, with the Gold Medal Game being played on Feb. 22. Team USA has medaled in the sport in each of the last five Winter Olympics.
