Gymnastics Knocks Off No. 12 Sun Devils
February 03, 2018 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State's 13th-ranked gymnastics team knocked off No. 12 Arizona State in the 13th annual DAM Cancer meet, presented by The Corvallis Clinic, Saturday afternoon at Gill Coliseum. OSU led from the outset and for the second straight week poured on the big scores on the floor exercise late in the meet to secure the win, 196.725-195.050.
Â
Oregon State led through the meet taking a lead in the opening rotation with a season-best 49.150 on the vault to ASU's 49.025 on the bars. Sophomore Destinee Davis tied for the meet-high with a career-best 9.875 while Sabrina Gill and Mary Jacobsen each tallied scores of 9.850.
Â
OSU continued to widen its lead in each subsequent rotation as the Beavers hit 24 out of 24 routines for the first time in 2018.
Â
"We were a little shaky on the beam, but they just kept moving on through," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "We know with this young group we'll have some of those moments, but it was good to see they just fought on through and finished strong on the floor."
Â
It was a team effort as the Beavers had a different gymnast win or tie for the meet-high on each event. Sophomore Alyssa Minyard tied for the meet's high score with a career-best 9.875 on the bars, while Dani Dessaints performed a beautiful beam routine to register a season-high 9.90 to notch her second win of the year on the apparatus. Isis Lowery got the crowd going in the late going with a career-high 9.925 on the floor exercise to win the event. Sabrina Gill wrapped up her second career all-around win with a career-best 39.375.
Â
"This group of gymnasts just isn't satisfied with doing the minimum. So many of them are doing extra stuff, training bigger vaults, better skills. It's great to have that kind of attitude, from within, where they are striving to do a little more to make the lineup and to push the people ahead of them so that if we need to rest someone we'll have a capable backup plan."
Â
Gill recorded a career-best 9.850 on the vault and tied her personal marks of 9.875 on beam and 9.850 on the floor en route to the all-around win.
Â
Junior McKenna Singley, who was limited to two events last week due to illness, returned to the all-around against the Sun Devils recording a career-best 39.275.
Â
The Beavers go on the road next week to visit Pacific Northwest rival Washington in Seattle on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
