Beavers Register Season-High, Remain Unbeaten at Home
February 17, 2018 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State gymnastics team, ranked No. 11 in the nation, registered its best score of the year topping the 197-point plateau for the first time in 2018 to defeat No. 24 Arizona 197.300-145.375 Saturday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
Â
Oregon State led throughout the meet gaining the early advantage in the opening rotation 49.150-48.750. The Beavers just missed a season-best on the vault with McKenna Singley tallying a career-best 9.850 and Mary Jacobsen added a meet-high 9.875 to lead the way.
Â
OSU continued to widen the gap in each rotation as the team posted season-best scores on bars and beam.
Â
"This result was great for us," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "We were resting a few of our athletes just looking at what's coming up. There is never really a good time to do that, but we thought that's what was needed. The others really rose to the occasion. That's what it's all about and to see what is coming through our exhibitions really shows the depth continues to grow."
Â
The Beavers' bars lineup bettered its previous season-high by nearly two-tenths with a team score of 49.400 behind Jacobsen (9.950), Alyssa Minyard (9.925) and Shireen Khamedoost (9.875) each posting career-best routines.
Â
On the beam, Singley and Destinee Davis each notched career-bests with matching scores of 9.900 and Minyard tied her personal mark of 9.800 as well to register a team score of 49.300.
Â
Coming off strong performances in the first three rotation, the Beavers tallied their highest score of the meet in the final stanza with a 49.450 on the floor exercise. Kaitlyn Yanish delivered a career-best 9.950 in the final routine, Isis Lowery (9.925), Jacobsen (9.900), and Niya Mack (9.850) each delivered high quality routines tying their personal marks as well.
Â
While Oregon State produced its best meet of the year, Arizona performed short-handed with just eight gymnasts available to compete.
Â
Saturday's event was the Beavers' Dam Worth It meet. Dam Worth It is the OSU's student-athlete driven campaign with the goal of destigmatizing and raising awareness about student-athlete mental health issues. The Dam Worth It campaign was started by former OSU gymnast Taylor Ricci and current Beaver soccer player Nathan Braaten.
Â
"It was so great to see the sportsmanship between both teams," Chaplin said. "Arizona, with the low numbers, came over to cheer for us when we were on bars and beam, when they didn't have anyone else on vault and floor. And in the last ceremony of our Dam Worth It meet really stood out to me as the two teams came together as one. That shows a lot of the type of athletes and coaches that we have in our sport in this conference. It is incredible to come together for these different causes that we're really fighting for, from "Together We Rise" to "Dam Worth It," we're all fighting to make our sport better and stronger. The sportsmanship goes a long way because when it comes to these types of events it doesn't just hit one team, it effects all of us. It was incredible to me, and emotional, to watch how the two teams came together and helped support each other through today."
Â
The Beavers return to the road next week to visit Pac-12 rival UCLA in Westwood on Sunday at 3 p.m.
