Beavers End Kajikawa Trip with Win over Mizzou

Oregon State goes 4-1 on the weekend with two wins over ranked foes
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oregon State University softball program got solid outings in the circle from junior Meehra Nelson (Simi Valley, Calif.) and freshman Mariah Mazon (Tulare, Calif.) to take a 3-1 win over No. RV/RV Missouri on Sunday at Farrington Stadium
"I thought the team did a great job bouncing back," said head coach Laura Berg. "We didn't get a lot of hits last night but we did today and it was good to see them bring the energy, to execute and to bounce back against a very good SEC team."
Nelson (3-0) went five innings of two-hit ball for the Beavers (4-1), striking out two, while Mazon earned her first career save with two innings of work and a pair of punchouts.
Oregon State tallied a run in the first inning for the second time this weekend after freshman Hope Brandner (Vacaville, Calif.) roped a single into left field to score junior Shelby Weeks (Tracy, Calif.) who reached on an infield single to short.
Mizzou (2-3) posted the equalizer on a solo shot in the bottom of the second after Kolby Romaine took the fifth pitch of the at bat to straightaway center field.
The hit was nearly a two-run shot, but junior Kayleen Shafer (Mission Viejo, Calif.) gunned down her third runner of the weekend after nailing Cayla Kessinger at second base during the pitch prior to the home run.
The Beavers got two more baserunners in the top of the third, eager to blow the game open, but a timely pitching change from the Tigers ensure the rally would be cut short. Lauren Rice came in relief for Madi Norman with one out in the frame and retired the next two batters.
Freshman Camryn Ybarra (Mission Viejo, Calif.) pushed insurance runs across for Oregon State in the top of the fifth with her two-run liner into center field to cap Weeks and senior McKenna Arriola (West Hills, Calif.) for a 3-1 Beaver lead.
Mazon was billed as the reliever in the bottom of the sixth, striking out two in the frame en route to her first career save.
The Beavers will head back out on the road the following week, first with a non-conference contest against No. 24/22 Louisiana-Lafayette on Thursday, February 15, before competing in the Purple and Gold Challenge the next day.
