February 10, 2018 | Women's Gymnastics
SEATTLE, Wash. – The No. 11 Oregon State gymnastics team notched its highest road score of the season in a loss to No. 16 Washington Saturday afternoon, 197.000-196.500.
Â
Oregon State recorded a season-high 49.175 on the vault and held a slim lead 98.300-98.275 at the midpoint, but with a couple minor stumbles, OSU couldn't hold off the home team in the latter stages of the meet.
Â
Freshman Kaitlyn Yanish led off the Beavers' vault lineup with a season-best 9.850 to set the table for the squad's best score of year. Destinee Davis and Dani Dessaints followed with matching scores of 9.80 and Mary Jacobsen added a 9.825. In the anchor spot, sophomore Lena Greene, who recently upgraded her vault, made her OSU debut in a competitive lineup posting a 9.90 to win the event title in her first appearance.
Â
Dessaints, a senior, made her first appearance in the bars lineup since the 2016 season-opener returning to the anchor position to score 9.80. Mariana Colussi-Pelaez tallied a team-best 9.850 on the event to tied for second in the meet.
Â
Junior McKenna Singley registered the first event title of her career scoring a career-best 9.925 on the floor exercise. Isis Lowery and Yanish each added scores of 9.875 as the Beavers' sixth-ranked floor lineup posted a team-score of 49.275, the Beavers' highest event score of the day.
Â
Trailing 147.625-147.575 heading to the final event, OSU immediately found itself in a hole when beam their leadoff performer, Singley, missed her tumbling series. The next five gymnasts came through though and the Beavers avoided counting a fall. Yanish registered her second season-best of the day with a 9.80 and Maela Lazaro and Dessaints each added season-high scores of 9.90 to ensure the Beavers best road score of the season.
Â
"I was glad to see them come back on the beam," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "It's a young team and they showed fight and they had each other's back. This was a good learning experience, you have to be spot on when you're on the road. We'll focus on the positives from tonight, and there were plenty, and we'll build on those and we'll get back in the gym and clean up the rest."
