Beavers Score Big, Take Down Stanford
January 27, 2018 | Women's Gymnastics
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The 18th-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team knocked off No. 23 Stanford in the Beavers' home opener Saturday afternoon at Gill Coliseum. The Beavers recovered from an early deficit before pouring it on late in the meet whipping the home crowd of 4,064 into a frenzy during the final floor exercise routines.
Â
Oregon State trailed after the first rotation by a score of 49.225-49.075. It didn't last long as the Beavers rebounded in the second stanza to take the lead at the halfway mark, 98.300-98.275. OSU widened its lead over the final two events to secure their season-best score to date including season-highs on the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise en route to the win.
Â
Sophomore Maela Lazaro, a native of Aiea, Hawai'i with a couple dozen family, friends and club teammates in attendance, made her college debut in the competitive lineup on the balance beam scoring 9.900 to win the event title.
Â
The Beavers finished the meet particularly strong on the floor exercise with four gymnasts setting or tying career-marks. OSU tallied a season-best 49.475 on the apparatus including a 9.950 from freshman anchor Kaitlyn Yanish. Fellow freshmen Savanna Force (9.900) and Niya Mack (9.850) got the lineup started with career-best routines and junior Mary Jacobsen added a personal-best 9.900 as well.
Â
"With Kenna (McKenna Singley) getting sick this week we had to change some lineups around and do some things differently," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "This is the first time Maela (Lazaro) has ever done beam for us, to come in and go 9.9 was amazing. Destinee (Davis) came in for the first time on vault and went 9.85 and Niya (Mack), this was her first time competing and there's another 9.85. So those people we were putting in and changing that had never competed really stepped up and did some great routines. I'm really happy for them. They push that lineup every day and for them to get there and make the most of the opportunity is always what you hope to see athletes do. That way they make our jobs much harder to make lineups the next week."
Â
OSU's other event winners were Dani Dessaints and Davis, who tied with the meet's top vault score of 9.850, and Yanish Yanish, who earned the floor title with her 9.950.
Â
Producing personal-bests were Davis (9.850) and Sabrina Gill (9.825) on vault, Mary Jacobsen (9.900) and Shireen Khamedoost (9.850) on bars, Lazaro (9.900) and Alyssa Minyard (9.800) on beam and on floor, Kaitlyn Yanish (9.950), Savanna Force (9.900), Jacobsen (9.900) and Mack (9.850).
Â
Sabrina Gill, who was the Beavers' lone all-around performer with Singley limited to bars and beam this week due to illness, tallied a 39.200 in the all-around.
Â
Two OSU gymnasts – sophomore Maela Lazaro (beam) and freshman Niya Mack (floor) – made their college debuts for the Beavers Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Beavers remain home next week to host the annual DAM Cancer meet against Arizona State. The meet is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
