Oregon State will host regionals in 2019 and 2020
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University has been selected to host the 2019 and 2020 NCAA Women's Basketball Regionals at the Moda Center in Portland.
The women's basketball regionals will add to Oregon State events in the Portland area, including the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, the Dam City Showcase, the Dam City Classic, baseball games and football practices.
"This a terrific opportunity for basketball fans to watch the very best student-athletes in the game," Scott Barnes, Oregon State Vice President/Director of Athletics, said. "The growing success of Coach (Scott) Rueck's program and the popularity of women's basketball in the Pacific Northwest will make this a first-class event and continue our goal to showcase Oregon State University in the Portland Metro area as well as the nation."
Oregon State worked in conjunction with the Rose Quarter, the Oregon Sports Authority and Travel Portland on a bid that was submitted this past August. The Beavers have hosted the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament at Gill Coliseum each of the last three seasons.
"It's an honor for Oregon State University to host these upcoming regionals," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "Passion for women's basketball in the Northwest is at an all-time high, and this in an exciting opportunity for Portland and we are excited to bring this prestigious event to Portland."
"The excitement generated by March Madness is simply unparalleled and we are absolutely thrilled to be part of the team that is bringing the NCAA Tournament to Portland," said Drew Mahalic, CEO of the Oregon Sports Authority.
"The NCAA Tournament is one of the nation's premier sporting events, and we're happy to host men's action for the fourth time while bringing women's tournament games to our venue for the first time," said Chris Oxley, Senior Vice President of Venue Operations at the Rose Quarter. "Basketball fans in Portland are extremely passionate and knowledgeable, and we're looking forward to bringing them the best that college basketball has to offer."
"Portland is honored to be selected to host the 2020 NCAA Women's Basketball Championships for the regional round," said Steve Faulstick, Executive Vice President of Convention and International Tourism Sales for Travel Portland. "March Madness has been an economic boon for our region the three times we've hosted the men's tournament and we're thrilled to welcome the women's tourney. Portland's hospitality community is looking forward to making the Women's 2020 Regional tournament the best ever."
The event will mark the first time the state of Oregon has hosted an NCAA Women's Basketball Regional since 2000, when the three-game weekend was played at Memorial Coliseum.
