SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Oregon State cross country team set four new Top-20 marks and defeated three regionally-ranked opponents on Friday at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend.
Senior Emily Weber, sophomore Juliana Mount, junior Kristiane Width and freshman Sara Christianson all set new Top-20 standards and substantially bettered their cross country PRs for 5,000 meters. OSU placed 19th in the 23-team Blue race, which featured six teams in this week's USTFCCCA Top 30 national rankings and 21 in the UTTFCCA's regional rankings.
Weber placed 52nd overall in 17:11.5, a PR by 15 seconds and the eighth-fastest time in school history. Mount took 61st in 17:16.7 in her 2016 debut, a PR by 54 seconds and the 11th-bext time in school history. Width was 66th in 17:20, a PR by 23 seconds and the No. 12 all-time clocking.
OSU's other scorers were freshman Lexi Reed (123rd, 18:04.4) and senior Samantha Lewis (136th, 18:14.4). Reed matched her 5K personal-best; Lewis improved hers by 15 seconds.
Redshirt sophomores Sam McKinnon (149th, 18:28.1) and Nicole Goecke (154th, 18:36.9) completed OSU's varsity team. Goecke better her time from the Sept. 15 Dellinger Invitational by 26 seconds; McKinnon ran 10 seconds faster.
Senior Morgan Anderson, a scorer in OSU's first two meets, did not make the trip as expected because of illness.
"It was a really good day for us," coach Kelly Sullivan said. "Emily, Juliana and Kristiane all ran together and did a great job."
In the Open race, Christianson took sixth in 17:41.4 in her varsity debut, tying her for 18th on the all-time Top-20 list. Junior Kala Kopecek was 19th in 18:20.7, an improvement of 1:08 from the Sept. 15 Dellinger Invitational. Freshmen Emily Bacon was 34th in 18:38.7 and sophomore Gwyneth McMorris was 62nd in 19:22.9.
"Sara ran great," Sullivan said. "If we plug her into the varsity race she takes about 90th and we move up considerably," and challenge for 14th or 15th place.
"This race shows we can be a very good team, that's it's not a fantasy for us to do well," especially when competing at full strength with the addition of Christianson, the return of Anderson and the anticipated season-long improvements of others.
The Beavers defeated North Carolina, Clemson, Texas A&M and Nebraska. North Carolina and Texas A&M are ranked sixth and Clemson is ranked 13th in their respective regions. They finished just eight points behind No. 24 Vanderbilt.
OSU returns to Indiana on Saturday, Oct. 15, for the NCAA Pre-Nationals at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course at Terra Haute. The NCAA Championships will be held on the same layout on Nov. 19.
