Beavers In Fifth Place At The Jackrabbit
September 26, 2016 | Men's Golf
VALENTINE, Neb. – The Oregon State men's golf team battled through windy conditions and a frost delay to sit in fifth place after the first day of competition at The Jackrabbit on Monday.
Â
The first round was cancelled due to high winds on Sunday, so the 12-team field tried to get two rounds in on Monday. Only three of those teams finished before play was halted due to darkness.
Â
The Beavers shot a 5-over 293 in the morning round at the par-72, 7,785-yard Dunes Course at the Prairie Club and are 7 under in the afternoon with three players needing to finish the round.
Â
The tournament will resume at 6:30 a.m. PT (8:30 a.m. CT) on Tuesday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
Â
"I thought we were a bit tense to start, which is to be expected a little as it is our first event of the season," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "As a group, I thought they did a great job mentally of being into every shot and competing for a very long day in some windy conditions."
Â
Senior Kevin Murphy opened the tournament with a 1-over 73 and was on fire in his second round, carding an eagle and three birdies to put him at 5 under with three holes to play.
Â
"Kevin played well by his score, but he actually hit in some crazy spots and was able to get up and down," Reehoorn said. "He didn't let the bad shots bother him and knew he would be able to rely on his short game."
Â
Senior Conner Kumpula also shot a 1-over 73 in the first round and is even through 16 holes in his afternoon round.
Â
Freshman Shawn Lu, who is making his collegiate debut, shot a 2-over 74 in the morning. He eagled the first two holes in the afternoon and is also even through 16 holes in the second round.
Â
Junior Jonas Liebich had the comeback of the day, shooting a 4-under 32 over his final nine holes to finish with a 3-over 77-70--147.
Â
"The back nine by Jonas this afternoon was so good," Reehoorn said. "He's been working to make sure he is mentally stronger and stays in the round. Because he was able to do it today, he finished with a 32 on his last nine holes."
Â
Senior Calum Hill was able to get both rounds in before play was suspended and finished the day with a 4-over 73-75--148.
