Upgrades planned for Whyte Track & Field Center
September 15, 2016 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State will make significant improvements to the Whyte Track & Field Center in preparation for hosting the multi-events portion of the 2017 Pacific-12 Conference Track & Field Championships.
A video scoreboard, the hammer throw area; broadcast infrastructure and warm-up space for all home meets on the back stretch, to include a third pole vault runway (east and west) for competitions and practices; a third javelin runway to allow throwing into grass area of the hammer for practices and competitions; additional lane lines and starting lines for additional practices and prep for warmups for hosting home meets off the straightway, and a distance plaza area will be completed for the multi-events competition, scheduled for May 6-7, 2017.
The upgrades to allow hosting of the multi-events competition are part of Phase II of the donor-funded project to upgrade the Whyte Track & Field Center. The additional aspects of Phase II of a three-phase enhancement plan are the installation of grandstands, a press box, restrooms, concessions and other amenities and will come online as donations are secured.
Phase I was completed for the 2014 season and included an International Association of Athletics Federation-certified Olympic-caliber polyurethane surface; a FieldTurf infield; a nine-lane track; high jump aprons; long jump, triple jump, pole vault and javelin runways; shot put throw sectors, and dual discus rings.
"Oregon State athletics is fully committed to our track and field program, and completing the Whyte Track & Field Complex is a top priority," Vice President/Director of Athletics Todd Stansbury said. "The Beavers will be ready the next opportunity we have to host one of the top championships in the sport in the country.
"I'm excited we will get a taste of this incredible event on campus with the multi- events the week before."
The multi-event competition features the seven-event heptathlon for women and the 10-event decathlon for men. The running and field events will be held at Hayward Field in Eugene on May 13-14. Television coverage of the event will air on Pac-12 Network.
"The last time Oregon State hosted the Pac-10 championships was 1987, so it will be the first time in 30 years we've been able to stage a meet of this stature on campus," OSU head coach Kelly Sullivan said. "It is exciting to do that again, especially coming off an Olympic year," when interest in track & field spikes nationwide.
"The multi-event competition at Oregon State has a great tradition, with Olympian Cindy Greiner, our school record-holder Bengt Larsson (7,677 points), and All-American Steve Pauly (7,648). The 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medalist, Ashton Eaton, is a Pac-12 alum," as is 2016 heptathlon bronze medalist Brianne Theisen-Eaton of Canada.
"We will also have an alumni gathering that weekend," Sullivan added. "People who haven't been here for a while will be able to see part of the next phase of improvements.
"And we will have athletes competing in the heptathlon, so they will have someone to cheer for."
OSU last hosted a conference meet in 1987 at the old Patrick Wayne Valley Track, the current site of the OSU Softball Complex.
OSU has a rich track and field tradition that includes numerous national, international and Olympic champions, including 1968 Olympic gold-medal high jumper Dick Fosbury, a member of the Pac-12's All-Century men's track & field team. Olympic high jumper Joni Huntley, the first American woman to clear 6-0, was named to the Pac-12's women's All-Century team.
