Oregon State Splits Two Saturday
September 10, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Four Beavers finished with double doubles in the second match of the day Saturday
STOCKTON, Calif. – Mary-Kate Marshall, Lanesha Reagan, Lila Toner and McKenna Hollingsworth all finished with double doubles as the Oregon State volleyball team nearly overcame a two-set deficit in a 3-2 loss to Pacific Saturday night at the Spanos Center.
Â
Set scores were 18-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23 and 11-15.
Â
The near comeback came on the heels of a three-set win over Northern Colorado to start Oregon State's (4-4 overall) day.
Â
Marshall finished with a match-best 21 kills in 55 attempts against the Tigers, collecting her second double double of the weekend. She also had 14 digs and three assists with one ace and four blocks.
Â
Reagan was close behind Marshall with 16 kills of her own, adding 12 digs with a block, service ace and assist. The double double was her third of the year and first since the Ultra Ankle Challenge.
Â
Toner, meanwhile, recorded 12 kills and 17 digs for her team-leading fourth double double of the season. Her 12 kills gave her a season-best and she tallied 34 over the three matches in Stockton after recording 11 in each of her first two outings.
Â
Lastly, Hollingsworth had her second double double on Saturday, finishing with 51 assists and 16 digs against the Tigers. She also had three blocks, a service aces and four kills.
Â
Kayla Ellis also had 16 digs for the Beavers, who had three players with 15 or more digs for the first time since the match against UALR in the 2014 postseason. That also happened to be the team's last match with five players with 10 or more digs.
Â
Pacific (4-5) jumped out to a two-set lead before the Beavers mounted a comeback. Oregon State hit a robust .400 to take set three, 25-18. Oregon State never trailed in set three, which was also the case in set four, a 25-23 Beavers victory.
Â
After just 14 ties and three lead changes in the first four sets – all three lead changes came in the first – the teams accounted for seven ties and five lead changes in the deciding frame.
Â
Oregon State first held an 8-7 lead as the teams traded sides.
Â
A kill by Reagan put the Beavers up 10-9 before the Tigers tied the score – at that point, no team had held more than a two-point lead during the final set. Pacific, however, scored the next four points after the 10-point tie before a kill by Serena Bruin made it 14-11 in favor of the Tigers. But Pacific's Ashlyn Fleming gave Pacific the victory with her 17th and final kill of the night.
Â
Oregon State hit .197 on the night, narrowly trailing Pacific's .209 clip. The teams tied with 79 digs, and the Beavers held a 13-11.5 lead at the net.
Â
Marshall and Toner were named to the all-tournament team at the completion of the match. Toner had 41 digs to go along with her 34 kills. Marshall, meanwhile, tallied 41 kills and 36 digs over two days.
Â
Oregon State finishes its non-conference regular-season slate next week when the Beavers visit Moscow, Idaho, to take on Idaho, Tennessee Tech and Wyoming Thursday and Friday.
