Team Black Wins Orange & Black Scrimmage
August 19, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Team Black won sets one and three to earn the victory
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Beaver Nation's first opportunity to see the 2016 Oregon State volleyball team came Friday night at Gill Coliseum when the Beavers played in their annual Orange & Black Scrimmage.
Â
Those members of Beaver Nation were treated to quite the show.
Â
Team Black won the three-set scrimmage, 25-21, 16-25 and 25-17.
Â
All in all, it was a night of positives for head coach Mark Barnard, who was an "impartial observer" at the match, allowing his staff to coach both teams.
Â
Barnard, who will make his collegiate debut as a head coach next weekend, saw a host of positives at the scrimmage.
Â
The scrimmage "is always a good opportunity to play in front of crowd," Barnard noted, with a large contingent of Beaver fans in attendance. "The quality of play was very good. We are assessing players every day and it was good to see some head-to-head competition.
Â
"The difficult thing for me is picking a starting unit next week, which is exactly what I want."
Â
Team Black won the first set thanks to a late 7-0 run that pushed the squad ahead after being down three, 20-17.
Â
Team Orange, which wore white, evened up the score with a 25-16 win in set two. The squad went on a 6-0 run early in the set to go up 15-7, and never looked back.
Â
The third and final set was a seesaw battle early one, with Team Black holding a 13-12 midway through after Team Orange went on an 8-1 run. Team Black went on a 6-0 run of its own, and held off late challenges for the 25-17 win.
Â
Members of Team Orange: Lila Toner, Delaney Taylor, Merritt Stewart, Rachel Buehner, Maddy Gravley, Lanesha Reagan, Kory Cheshire, Shalom Ifeanyi, Daniela Vargas and Sam Rouleau (who played for Team Black in set three).
Â
Members of Team Black: Jessi Seumalo, Emilie Wilmes, Haylie Bennett, McKenna Hollingsworth, Makenna Browne, Katelyn Driscoll, Mary-Kate Marshall, Kayla Ellis and Serena Bruin.
Â
Oregon State opens the 2016 season when hosting the Ultra Ankle Challenge at Gill Coliseum. The Beavers open August 26 with a match against Utah State at 10 a.m. OSU will also play Portland that night at 7 p.m. The tournament ends when the Beavers face Seattle at 7 p.m. on August 27.
