Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State men's soccer team opened the 2016 exhibition season on Friday with a 3-1 victory over the University of British Columbia at Paul Lorenz Field.
Junior forward Jordan Jones assisted on a first-half goal and then notched the clincher at 87:30 for the Beavers. Junior forwards Timmy Mueller and Jaime Miralles also scored for OSU, which led 2-1 at halftime and then protected a 2-1 lead while playing a man down for much of the second half before Jones put the game to bed.
Twenty-three players saw at least 18 minutes of action as OSU coach Steve Simmons substituted liberally on a 90-degree day to keep his side as fresh as possible.
"In all my time at Oregon State this is probably the most comfortable I've felt playing a bench as deep as I did today," said Simmons, starting his eighth season in Corvallis. "That's a good starting point.
"It helps when you have so many returners. We have a couple guys coming off of injuries so it's going to get even more competitive within the squad, which is what we need.
"It was as very good test. UBC is a national power in Canada and a perennial contender for their national championship. It was a stiff test and we got to see a lot of different looks.
"We had hot conditions and we managed it. Now it's review, and then we get Portland" in their preseason finale at 6 p.m. on Aug. 19 at Lorenz Field
Goalies Nolan Wirth and Ryan Vincent each played a half; Wirth had four saves, Vincent none. OSU outshot the Thunderbirds 17-12 and had a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
OSU outshot the Thunderbirds 10-7 in the first half and took a 2-1 advantage at intermission on a free kick by Miralles at 38:50. A transfer from Vermont from Vinaros, Spain, he drilled a shot over the wall of defenders and into the upper right-corner from 25 yards out.
The Beavers took a 1-0 lead at 20:21 when Mueller converted from 12 feet out to complete a three-way play with Morales and Jones. Mueller had four of OSU's 10 first-half shots, and six overall in just 49 minutes.
UBC's Manpal Brar headed home the equalizer at 37:30, nodding home a flick from Lucas Reis. The deadlock proved to be short-lived, however, as Mirrales countered less than two minutes later.
The Beavers open the regular season against DePaul on Aug. 26 in the annual Hensor-Zaher Memorial Tournament. Their other tourney game is with Wright State at 3 p.m. Aug. 28.
