Beavers claim dramatic OT win over Cal

Garretson's winning carry, on a third-and-one play, erased a 44-41 California lead and gave the Beavers their first Pacific-12 Conference victory of the Gary Andersen coaching era.
"That was wild, to say the least," Andersen said. "I am really proud of those kids. We beat a very good team, a team that knows how to win. We found a way to make one more play than they did a the end.
"Offense, defense and special teams all contributed. We talked all week long about how it had to be a team effort. It's awesome for these kids,  I'm proud of them they deserved it. They worked their tails off to get here. It's a good moment. These kids have been through a lot they battled and they fought, there is no give up in them, no quit in them.
"It's a great day to be a Beaver. Our fans deserved that victory. It's awesome to be able to celebrate that victory in our stadium with our kids and our fans. It's a special moment for me, one I will never forget."
The Beavers rushed for 474 yards on 50 carries, a school record against a conference opponent. They erupted for 559 yards of total offense, an all-time best in the 17-game Andersen coaching era.
Sophomore tailback Ryan Nall battered the Golden Bears for 221 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries, the 10th-best single-game rushing performance in school history. Nall scored on runs of 80, 5 and 4 yards, giving him seven TDs over his last six games.
"The offensive line did a great job all game long blocking for me," Nall said. "Our game plan was to run the ball, we knew we could run on them. Most of our big plays came up the middle and the coaches did a good job of calling the right run plays. The rest is on us and the O-line executed perfectly."
The Beavers (2-3, 1-1 Pac-12) led throughout the game and held a 34-17 advantage in the third quarter after Nall's TD run with 2:43 left in the third quarter. However, the Bears erupted for 24 fourth-quarter points and finally pulled even, 41-41, on Matt Anderson's 29-yard field goal with five seconds to play.
OSU won the overtime coin toss and held the Bears to a field goal. Garretson completed an 8-yard pass to Timmy Hernandez on second down on OSU's possession. He bobbled the next snap but gathered the ball, cut to his right and ran untouched into the end zone on a draw play.
"I've never in my life envioned myself running for a touchdown in overtime," Garretson said. "Running was pretty sweet, I don't think anything tops that."
Garretson also had kudos for the offensive line, which protected him all night and paved the way for the Beavers'' astronomical rushing total. They did not allow a sack and OSU did not lose a yard on any of its 50 runs.
"All of our success is owed to these guys," Garretson said. "Our front five, hats off to them. That's a game ball for them."
The Beavers led 10-0, 17-10 and 34-17 at the quarter stops before Cal's fourth-quarter comeback forced overtime. Garretson's walkoff run then gave the Beavers their first overtime victory since a 51-48 triumph at Utah on Sept. 14, 2013.
