Oregon State opens the season on Nov. 11
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women's basketball team opened practice for the 2016-17 season on Thursday, hungry to get back to work with some new faces on the floor.
"We've been waiting to get back out there for a long time," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "We've had great workouts and a great offseason. I thought our conditioning was great. I felt like everyone was ready to go and receptive. I really liked the energy today."
The Beavers welcomed a quartet of talented freshmen into their first official training session, as Mikayla Pivec, Janessa Thropay, Kat Tudor and Maddie Washington all competed in their first practice with the program. With the season opener just over a month away, the new players are already starting to make their presence felt with the team.
"From the beginning, our freshmen have picked things up quickly," Rueck said. "I wasn't surprised by how well they did today; what was fun was seeing them pick things up so quickly. There were very few mistakes, once they received instruction. I was really encouraged by how quickly they adapted to this environment."
Oregon State's returners are headlined by senior guard Sydney Wiese, a three-time All-Pac-12 First Team Selection, who is looking to continue building on her already stellar career. She is joined in the back-court by fellow senior Gabriella Hanson, one of the best defensive players in the Pac-12.
Sophomores Katie McWilliams and Taylor Kalmer head into their second season aiming to build on their promising debut campaigns. McWilliams made 11 starts last season when Wiese missed time due to injury, while Kalmer posted a pair of double-digit scoring games.
In the front-court, Oregon State enters the year with a wealth of experience. Junior Marie Gulich saw the floor in every game last season, playing 20 minutes or more eight times. Senior Kolbie Orum and redshirt-junior Breanna Brown have both been with the Beavers the last three seasons, and will be looking to continue their impressive offensive efficiency from last season. Orum shot a robust 49.1 percent in 2015-16, while Brown followed close behind at 44.2 percent. Redshirt-freshman Tarea Green will look to make her debut this season as well, after sitting out the 2015-16 campaign.
The Beavers are coming off a 2015-16 season that saw them make the first Final Four in program history. Along the way, Oregon State notched Pac-12 regular season and tournament titles, and set a school record with 32 victories.
