Nall shines in battle with Cougars
October 30, 2016 | Football
Nall became the 33rd player in OSU history to rush for 1,000 yards, and scored three times for the second time in his career. His 89-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was the third-longest in school history.
The Beavers (2-6, 1-4 Pac-12) led 21-0 in the second quarter and 24-6 at halftime but could not hold off the Cougars (6-2, 5-0) in the second half. OSU took its final lead, 31-28, with 12:40 remaining but the Cougars responded with the winning touchdown on their next possession.
OSU reached the WSU 35- and 34-yard lines the next two times it had the ball but was stopped on downs, the final time with 5:57 remaining. OSU regained possession at its 16 yard line with four seconds remaining and a desperation hook-and-lateral play was stopped at the OSU 40-yard line.
"We found a way in the first half to do the things we needed to do," just as WSU did in the second half, OSU coach Gary Andersen said. "It's a tough one, we've had a couple of those come our way.
"You have to play well in all phases of the game, offense, defense and special teams, and we did that in the first half," Andersen added. "In the second half the offense and defense didn't get it done."
Sophomore quarterback Marcus McMaryion established career-highs by completing 23 of 39 passes for 327 yards and two touchdowns, without an interception. Senior Victor Bolden Jr. had seven catches for 113 yards to lead seven players with receptions.
The Beavers gained 498 total yards, the second-most in a game this season. The 327 passing yard were the most in any game this season, by 99 yards.
Safety Jalen Moore had 10 tackles, a pass breakup and forced a fumble to lead the defense. Senior safety Brandon Arnold added nine.
OSU resumes Pac-12 action at Stanford on Nov. 5. The game will be televised by FS1, starting at 12:30 p.m.
