CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State head coach Wayne Tinkle had a message to his team before the first official practice on Monday.
"This is day one of the journey. I want you guys to realize that this thing is a marathon. So let's stay patient with each other."
With that the 2016-17 season was officially underway. Only one player – senior center Cheikh N'diaye – has been in the program more than a year, so Tinkle spent the majority of the two-and-a-half-hour practice working on fundamentals and defensive drills.
"It was a great first day," Tinkle said. "I'm really excited to be back on the court. We have a long way to go. We still aren't at 100 percent health wise. We have a lot of young guys who are trying to learn. So we might need to go at a snail's pace early on and make sure they have all of the concepts before we take a step forward.
"It was great to be out here. I'm excited to be on the court and get the season started here. There was a lot of enthusiasm with this group."
Junior guard Daine Muller (strained calf) and freshman forward Ben Koné (knee) missed the practice with injuries, but sophomore forward Tres Tinkle was back on the court for the first time since injuring his foot during a practice in Los Angeles last season.
"It's nice to see Tres back out there," Wayne Tinkle said. "He has a little different look in his eyes and a spring in his step. He's one of our leaders, so we can't get crazy and force too much upon him. We need to allow him to take gradual steps, knowing it's a long season."
Sophomore guard Tanner Sanders rejoined the team in August after playing baseball for the Beavers last season. He was a walk-on two years ago when Tinkle held open tryouts to fill his roster. After Monday's practice, Tinkle announced Sanders was awarded a scholarship for the 2016-17 season.
"We had a scholarship available and we didn't find anybody over the summer that we would just use one up on," Tinkle said. "Tanner is a kid that meant a lot to our program a couple of years ago. We know he will be big for us, not just in practice every day, but he's a guy who can get minutes and do some good things on the court.
"I'm happy to give him that scholarship for this year. He was thrilled to get it and will represent us very well."
Oregon State is coming off a season in which it reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 26 years. The Beavers went 19-13 overall with wins over seven teams that advanced to the Big Dance. OSU finished in a three-way tie for sixth place in Pac-12 play with a 9-9 mark, its best conference record since 1993.
