Three Beavers Advance To MLB Postseason
October 03, 2016 | Baseball
The Wild Card Games will be played this week in advance of NL & AL Division Series
CORVALLIS, Ore. – This will be a pretty big week for three former Oregon State baseball players.
Â
Josh Osich, Michael Conforto and Darwin Barney have all advanced to Major League Baseball's postseason with their respective clubs. And all three will get to that postseason quickly as their clubs are playing in Wild Card contests.
Â
Osich and his San Francisco Giants will visit Conforto and his New York Mets on Wednesday at 5 p.m. PT at Citi Field. That game will air live on ESPN.
Â
The two will be preceeded by Barney's Toronto Blue Jays, who will host the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday in the American League Wild Card Game. It will also start at 5 p.m. PT, and air live on TBS.
Â
It's the first postseason appearance for Osich, who made 59 appearances out of the bullpen for the Giants in 2016. He went 1-3 with a 4.71 earned run average, holding opponents to a .228 batting average.
Â
Conforto played in 109 games for the Mets in 2016, batting .220 with 21 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs and 42 runs batted in. He made the national spotlight in the 2015 postseason when he hit two home runs in the World Series against Kansas City.
Â
Barney, meanwhile, played in 104 games for Toronto in 2016, batting .269 with 13 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 19 RBI. Known as a super sub, he also pitched in one game for the Blue Jays. He has never appeared in the MLB postseason.
Â
The three highlight a spectacular 2016 in the Majors for Oregon State players. Overall, nine played at the MLB level during the season.
Â
Matt Boyd made 20 appearances for the Detroit Tigers, making 18 starts for a club that narrowly missed the postseason. He was 6-5 with a 4.53 ERA in 97 1/3 innings.
Â
Jacoby Ellsbury, in his third season with the New York Yankees, batted .263 with 24 doubles, five triples and nine home runs in 148 games. He also drove in 56 and stole 20 bases.
Â
Andrew Susac was traded from the Giants to the Milwaukee Brewers at the trade deadline, and appeared in nine games for the National League Central club. He hit a two-run home run on Sunday, the final day of the regular season.
Â
Cole Gillespie played in 41 games for the Miami Marlins, collecting three doubles, two triples and five RBI with a .235 batting average.
Â
Daniel Robertson played in nine games for the Seattle Mariners, finishing with one double and one RBI with a .263 batting average.
Â
Robertson's teammate in the Mariners' organization, Stefen Romero, also played in nine games at the MLB level. He finished with a double, three RBI and a .235 batting average.
