Liebich Leads OSU At Saint Mary’s Invite
October 25, 2016 | Men's Golf
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Jonas Liebich shot an even-par 71 in the second round of the Saint Mary's Invitational on Tuesday to lead the Oregon State men's golf team at the three-day, 54-hole event.
The Beavers were forced to play with only four players when senior Conner Kumpula was pulled midway through the second round with an injured shoulder. They slipped into a tie for 10th place in the 14-team field with a 31-over 296-303--599 at the par-71, 6,927-yard Poppy Hills Golf Course.
The final round is Wednesday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
"Conner played eight holes and I decided it was best he didn't continue on his ninth hole," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "He practiced on an off this past week and thought he would be good to go. But the compensation he has to make in his swing is too painful.
"On the sixth tee I let everyone know that was the decision I was going to make based on what I had seen from Conner. It obviously made it tough on the guys, but we should have been able to handle it.
"We will make a determination tomorrow if Conner can continue to go or not."
Liebich, a junior from Ingolstadt, Germany, responded well with five birdies to post an even-par 71 after opening the tourney with a 6-over 77. His excellent round on Tuesday skyrocketed him 35 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 18th place with a 6-over 148.
"Jonas responded in a great way, which was excellent to see," Reehoorn said.
Freshman Kyosuke Hara and senior Kevin Murphy are both tied for 21st place with a 7-over 149, as each player has posted rounds of 73-76. Freshman Shawn Lu is tied for 48th with an 11-over 73-80--153.
"I don't know if Conner not playing had any impact on their play," Reehoorn said. "We just didn't drive the ball very well and you have to be able to get the ball in the fairway on this course."
Sophomore Tom Kerkvliet, who is competing as an individual in his first tournament of the season, is tied for 21st place with a 7-over 74-75--149
San Diego State (11-over 579) has a six-stroke lead over Saint Mary's (15-over 583) for the team title and Eduardo Carrete of Saint Mary's (5-under 137) holds a four-stroke advantage over Tim Widing of San Francisco (1-under 141) for medalist honors.
