CORVALLIS, Ore. – Five members of the Oregon State wrestling team earned preseason Top-20 rankings from the InterMat website on Tuesday. The team was ranked No. 14 in the dual-meet pool, and No. 15 in the tournament rankings.
Junior All-American heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi, who took fifth place at the 2016 NCAA Championships with a 5-2 record, earned the highest ranking, No. 4. Dhesi was 32-5 last season, was the Pacific-12 Conference Wrestler of the Year and earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler award at the Pac-12 tournament while winning his weight class.
Dhesi, who will also compete in the World University Championships in Corum, Turkey, on Oct. 25-30, was also No. 4 in The Open Mat's preseason rankings.
Junior 125-pounder Ronnie Bresser (31-9) was ranked No. 5. He placed second at the Pac-12 tournament and was 3-2 at NCAAs after advancing for the second year in a row. He was ranked No. 7 by The Open Mat.
Redshirt senior 133-pounder Joey Palmer (26-12) was ranked No. 12. Palmer was second at the Pac-12 championships and then went 2-2 with two one-point losses in his second NCAA appearance. He was No. 8 in The Open Mat's preseason rankings.
Redshirt sophomore 184-pounder Corey Griego (24-12) was ranked 14th. He also took second at Pac-12s and went 1-2 at NCAAs in his first season of varsity competition. He was No. 16 in TOM's preseason rankings.
Redshirt junior 197-pounder Cody Crawford (19-14) was ranked No. 18. He took third at Pac-12s but did not learn at at-large NCAA berth. He was Pac-12 champion and an NCAA qualifier in 2015 as a redshirt freshman. He was No. 20 in TOM's preseason rankings.
Redshirt senior 149-pounder Joey Delgado was not ranked by InterMat; he was No. 18 in the TOM rankings. He took third at Pac-12s and went 1-2 in his second NCAA appearance.
The Beavers open the season on Nov. 3 with the annual Orange & Black Intrasquad meet at Gill Coliseum. Their first regular-season competition is the Nov. 6 Mike Clock Open at Pacific University in Forest Grove.
They open the dual-meet season on Nov. 12 with matches against Duke and host Appalachian State at Boone, N.C. Their home opener is Nov. 20 against Michigan; they begin Pacific-12 Conference action against Stanford on Jan. 30, 2017, also at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers are five-time defending Pac-12 champions. This year's Pac-12 Championships are Feb. 26, at Stanford. The NCAA Championships are March 16-18 at St. Louis.
Earlier this fall the Beavers were ranked 20th in the WIN 2016-17 preseason Tournament Power Index (TPI). Dhesi (4), Bresser (9), Palmer (10) and Griego (16) were also ranked.
The TPI is based on the school's wrestlers who are rated in WIN's individual rankings, predicting possible All-American candidates in the 2017 NCAA Championships, set for March 16-18 in St. Louis.
