Beavers ranked 15th in USTFCCCA West Region poll
October 17, 2016 | Women's Cross Country
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State cross country team cracked the national polls for the first time this season on Monday when it was ranked No. 15 in the West Region by the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Beavers burst into the top 15 on the strength of a standout performance at the Indiana State Pre-Nationals Invitational on Oct. 15. They placed first in the 25-team White pool at the prestigious completion, which was held on the same course as this year's NCAA Championships.
OSU defeated six regionally-ranked programs (Nevada, UTEP, Oakland, Miami of Ohio, Wichita State, Central Michigan) in winning its race. Senior Emily Weber placed second in the 168-women field and the Beavers edged Wake Forest 114-131 to capture the team title.
"This regional ranking is much-appreciated, especially since the West Region is the deepest and most competitive in the country," OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. "It is always nice to be recognized by your peers and this ranking reflects the hard work and dedication our student/athletes have shown this season.
"More importantly, being ranked in our region, and last Saturday's results at Indiana State, further illustrate that our plan of peaking in October and November for the Pacific-12 Conference Championships, and the NCAA West Regional, is working.
"We have improved every race this season, even though we have not always raced everyone who will compete at Pac-12s and Regionals. We plan to be at full strength, and at our very best, in our next two races, the most important competitions of our season."
The Beavers are one of 10 Pac-12 programs in the regional rankings.
Washington (1), Oregon (2), Stanford (5), UCLA (6), California (8), Arizona (10) and Arizona State (11) join them in the West Region; Colorado (1) and Utah (3) are ranked in the Mountain Region. Washington State is not ranked this week, but has been for much of the season.
So all told, OSU will run against nine regionally-ranked opponents at the Pacific-12 Conference Championships. That race is set for Friday, Oct. 28, at the Randolph North Course in Tucson, hosted by Arizona.
The NCAA West Regional is Nov. 11 at Sacramento, hosted by Sacramento State. Indiana State hosts the NCAA Championships, set for Nov. 19 at Terra Haute, Ind.
