Beavers fall to Colorado in Pac-12 opener
October 01, 2016 | Football
Junior Garrett Owens had field goals of 32 and 40 yards for the Beavers. Owens has two or more field goals in two of OSU's four games this season and seven times in his career. He is 6-for-8 (.750) this season and 28-for-36 (.778) lifetime.
Freshman tailback Artavis Pierce led the ground game by rushing for a career-high 61 yards in eight carries, with a long run of 18 yards. Pierce has gained 107 yards on 15 carries in his last two games, an average of 7.1 yards per attempt.
OSU (1-3, 0-1 Pac-12) opened the game impressively, getting a stop on its first defensive series and then marching 39 yards in 12 plays for a 32-yard Owens field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 8:15 left in the first quarter.
However, the Buffaloes (4-1, 2-0 Pac-12) scored on their next five possessions and added an interception return for a score to assume a 37-6 halftime advantage. Quarterback Steven Montez threw touchdown passes of 63, 51 and 33 yards to Shay Fields to spark Colorado's onslaught.
"They hit some deep balls down the field, that's been their M.O.," OSU coach Gary Andersen said of the Buffaloes. "They did a nice job of executing on offense. They got balls down the field, they ran successfully, and we were unable to do those two things. We had some opportunities early and we were uynable to produce.
"It's a difficult stretch for us. I promise you we will keep fighting."
A 40-yard field goal by Owens after the final Montez-to-Field TD made it 21-6. The Beavers would not score again and were held without a touchdown for the first time since a loss to UCLA on Nov. 7, 2015.
Quarterbacks Darell Garretson and Conor Blount split time for the second game in a row and combined to complete 10 of 32 passes for 100 yards. Sophomore Seth Collins led the receivers with five catches for 56 yards.
Treston Decoud had eight tackles, Brandon Arnold, Caleb Saulo, Bright Ugwoegbu and Manase Hungalu had seven apiece.
Nick Porebski averaged 44.6 yards on eight punts, with a long of 66 yards. He had four punts downed inside the 20-yard line.
The Beavers open their Pac-12 home season against California at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, at Reser Stadium. The game will be televised by Pac-12 Network.
